The Urban Forestry program in Boone
is handled by the Boone City Parks and Boone Public Works. Our
primary goal is to provide a healthy and safe tree population within
the City of Boone. We do this by removing dead, dangerous and diseased
trees, pruning around signs and intersections, planting trees to
replace removed trees, planting along new streets, and maintaining
the trees in the city parks. An inventory of the trees in the city
right-of-way is maintained at the Park Office.
Boone has a Tree Ordinance which establishes rules for planting,
care and removal of anything planted on city right-of-ways.
Any plantings or removals require the Urban Forester to approve.
(See Chapter 150 in the Code of Ordinances) Annually a windshield survey is taken to look for dead, dangerous
and diseased trees. A removal list is compiled from this survey
and from residents complaints during the year. We then hire a
tree care company to remove the trees and their stumps. Planting of trees takes place every spring through the Johnny
Appleseed Program. Tree planting sites are determined by the
Urban Forester. The Appleseed volunteers then plant the trees.
Usually the Saturday before Mother's Day. Boone has earned annual recognition since 1986 from the National
Arbor Day Foundation as a TREE CITY, USA. Tree care companies are required to obtain Tree Trimmer Licenses.
This is to ensure that these companies are properly insured and
properly equipped to handle the job. (See Capter 129 Tree Trimmers
in the Code of Ordinances)
